Rapier and main gauche against a (redacted because my brain went sideways) in a one on one? Yeah, good luck with that…they weren’t meant to fight slashing weapons.
On the other hand, the Imperial Guard has more reach and manoeuvrability here – not to mention, two arms^^
That’s only good to a point nad only in theory. Because from the little bit of blade history I studied in the 80’s (I won’t say which 80’s) The rapier maine gauche combo is a street / dueling choice. On an actual field, they aren’t so good. Rather weak. Sword and shield/buckler is the way. On open terrain like this, still better even giving up some reach.

Be it my original intention or your points, both should suit the story (and its themes) as it’s going to be told. So, at least it’s not a problem^^.
I still think it’s not that unbalanced… but I’m in the process of documenting myself and could change my mind.

What kind of scimitar is that? I’ve seen them depicted in banners from Northwestern Russia to the Caucasus, but … I’ve looked for it A LOT on the Internets and cannot get a name. Is it a Circassian sabre? I don’t think so.
